The Weight of Grace

"This is the terrible fix we are in. If the universe is not governed by an absolute goodness, then all our efforts are in the long run hopeless. But if it is, then we are making ourselves enemies to that goodness every day, and are not in the least likely to do any better tomorrow, and so our case is hopeless again....God is the only comfort, He is also the supreme terror: the thing we most need and the thing we most want to hide from." - C.S. Lewis from Mere Christianity

Lewis had a way of taking a truth and really hammering it home.  Nothing we do brings us to righteousness.  It's futile.  We can be as good we humanly can be, but it won't save us.  Lewis said we're making ourselves enemies to that goodness.  Well, what does that mean?  It means that even though we are aware of God, aware of His righteousness, our sin nature puts us at odds with God.  So, not only can we not be good enough to save ourselves, the bad that is in us it making us enemies of God.  This is not good.  God's justice demands our lives as payment for our sin (Romans 6:23a), as a result we really want to hide from Him.

But that's not the end...

Thank God we don't have to save ourselves.  Praise God for the calling of the Holy Spirit to our souls out of the darkness and the salvation of our lives through the atoning work of Christ alone!  Glory to God that our regenerate minds desire to do God's Will and when we do stumble our sin is forgiven and we are credited Christ's righteousness in exchange for our apology!  That is a truth that should knock you off your feet.  That truth is GOD'S PERFECT GRACE...

...and its really good!

That's a great quote. Mere Christianity is an excellent book - it takes what can be confusing truths and explains them so even an idiot (like me!) can understand them. Indeed, thank God for His grace. It seems like 90% of the world, churched and unchurched, is trying to find redemption on their own terms - it's the old "I'm basically a good person", or "I go to church every time the doors are open" and "I'm a religious/spiritual person" or whatever. It just goes against our human nature to let go of our eternal fate and trust God to save us, as He's promised. We tend to want to have a hand in the affair - to live up to some standard, be it religious or whatever, in hopes of somehow being good enough to make it, or at least good enough to not lose our salvation once we've gotten it. But that's totally bogus. We can never be good enough to warrant salvation to begin with - why do we think we can be good enough to keep it? It's all a matter of God's grace - if He's saved us to start with, it's His grace and power that will keep us. If He hasn't saved us, then we're lost. Plain and simple. I know I'm largely preaching to the choir here, but you never know who reads these things. Maybe somebody who'd depending on being a good Catholic, or a good Baptist or whatever, and deep down inside, scared that they have it all wrong. That would have been me some years ago. I'm thankful that God opened my eyes.

Pastor Josh your comments always make me feel so selfish and so humbled...I mean I understood what piper was getting at...Sometimes one can see and hear and know the truth but is blind to realize it in their own life...thank you...seriously...I've been so grateful the past couple of weeks because of the youth group sessions we have had..they have been really good...God is good...oh so good
